Lesser kestrels of the same colony do not overwinter together

چکیده

Abstract Migratory connectivity describes the linkage between breeding and non-breeding sites, having major ecological implications in birds: one season influence success of an individual or a population following season. Most studies on migratory have used large-scale approaches, often considering regional populations, but fine-scale are also necessary to understand colony connectivity. The lesser kestrel Falco naumanni, insectivorous raptor which form colonies during period, was considered strong based populations. However, no small scale been conducted. Therefore, we GPS-tracked 40 adult kestrels from 15 different Spanish colonies, estimating overlap index home ranges distance their centroids. It found that same placed areas at 347 ± 281 km (mean standard deviation) away each other (range = 23-990), overlapped by 38.4 23.6%. No differences intra-colony inter-colony metrics were found, suggests cluster do not overwinter together, they spread out mixed independently belonging throughout range species. Ultimately, this study highlights importance performing using approaches.

Why Do Kestrels Soar?

Individuals allocate considerable amounts of energy to movement, which ultimately affects their ability to survive and reproduce. Birds fly by flapping their wings, which is dependent on the chemical energy produced by muscle work, or use soaring-gliding flight, in which chemical energy is replaced with energy harvested from moving air masses, such as thermals. Flapping flight requires more ene...

Increase of heterozygosity in a growing population of lesser kestrels.

The lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni) suffered a sharp population decline over much of its European distribution range in the middle of the twentieth century. Still declining in some areas, the species has recently experienced a notable population recovery in certain regions. We examined the genetic diversity variation in a growing population of lesser kestrels from Central Spain over a 6-year pe...

Egg production and individual genetic diversity in lesser kestrels.

Fecundity is an important component of individual fitness and has major consequences on population dynamics. Despite this, the influence of individual genetic variability on egg production traits is poorly known. Here, we use two microsatellite-based measures, homozygosity by loci and internal relatedness, to analyse the influence of female genotypic variation at 11 highly variable microsatelli...

Dispersal within a spatially structured population of lesser kestrels: the role of spatial isolation and conspecific attractionD. Serrano & J.L. TellaDispersal in lesser kestrels

1. Factors governing dispersal rates have seldom been examined in spatially structured populations of vertebrates. We gathered information during 8 years on transfer rates between subpopulations in a spatially structured, growing population of colonial lesser kestrels Falco naumanni, and analysed the contribution of several variables related to spatial isolation and characteristics of both subp...

Colony Forming Unit Endothelial Cells Do not Exhibit Telomerase Alternative Splicing Variants and Activity

Introduction: Endothelial progenitor colony forming unit-endothelial cells (CFU-EC) were first believed to be the progenitors of endothelial cells, named endothelial progenitor cells. Further studies revealed that they are monocytes regulating vasculogenesis. The main hindrance of these cells for therapeutic purposes is their low frequency and limited replicative potentials. This study was unde...
